In ruling a domain the most essential thing is to get good people.
— Lord Nabeshima Naoshige
Bringing more good people into your life is obtained through your own efforts. Start by liking people. People will naturally accumulate around you. Do it seriously, or nothing will come of it.
— Samurai Wisdom

Lord Naoshige was deathly ill. In passing down the responsibility for his domain to his son, Lord Katsushige, he shared the following #wisdom as recorded in the #Hagakure:

"In ruling a domain the most essential thing is to get good people.

One asks of the gods and buddhas for things that cannot be obtained by human effort. Making good people come to one is something that can be obtained by one's own effort.

In anything, what one likes will naturally gather around one. If you start liking flowers, for example, then even if you didn't have one flower previously, in time, flowers will start accumulating around you. And even rare and hard to find flowers will appear.

In the same way, if you start liking people, then people will naturally accumulate around you. All that is necessary is for you to start liking them.

In any endeavour, if you are not serious, nothing will come of it."
